Ferns are one of the oldest plant groups on Earth, and grow in almost all environments across the globe. Among Canadian indigenous peoples, ferns are valued for their culinary and medicinal uses, and are associated with water, resilience and adaptability. Ferns symbolize harmony between nature and culture, and remind us of the enduring legacy and timelessness of life.

Keep this miniature fossilized fern in your pocket, pull it out and hold it to the sky for some good vibes. Each piece is made by hand, fused and fired in our home kiln for a minimum of 14 hours. Fern is only visible from certain angles, making it a beautiful little secret.

About Fossil Vitra:

Fossil Vitra, meaning “glass fossils,” preserves the ghost-like image of fresh leaves inside glass. These “fossils” are actually the tiny water droplets that have been trapped between layers of glass when the leaf burns away. Our fusing process holds these droplets in place, leaving behind the exact form of the leaf they once were.

Each piece is one of a kind, based on the unique shapes of the original leaves, and in Canada at out Markham, Ontario studio. Fused and fired for up to 24 hours at temperatures as hot as 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Using our own special techniques, we can create beautiful layers and designs in our final gems. This process can take up to 4 rounds in the kiln, over 100 hours of heat, and no two pieces ever turn out the same, making every piece your own truly original Artglas.
