Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus

Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus Pot Stake

Opuntia humifusa

The Eastern Prickly Pear cactus is rare in Canada, and occurs only in 4 known locations of southern Ontario. It grows in dry barrens or juniper savanna ecosystems, and has been listed as endangered in Canada since 1985. Erosion of its habitats, which are rare in Canada, invasive plants, and illegal harvesting by humans contribute to its decline.  Save the Eastern Prickly area: choose an Artglas version instead of the real thing!

In Canada, four species of cactus grow wild. Mostly found in dry barrens, savannah, or beach dune ecosystems,  Canada's cacti are an important source of food for wildlife, and pollinators such as bees, bats, and hummingbirds. The stalks of all of Canada's Cacti are edible and many have medicinal properties.

The Cactus' ability to thrive in harsh conditions has made them a Canadian symbol of hope, determination, and enduring love.
