Little Prickly Pear Cactus

Little Prickly Pear Cactus Pot Stake

Opuntia fragilis

Also known as the "Brittle Prickly Pear" this is the most  northerly cactus species, growing as far north as Fort St. John in British Columbia, Canada. This species is widespread in Canada, occurring as far west and eastern Ontario.

In Canada, four species of cactus grow wild. Mostly found in dry barrens, savannah, or beach dune ecosystems,  Canada's cacti are an important source of food for wildlife, and pollinators such as bees, bats, and hummingbirds. The stalks of all of Canada's Cacti are edible and many have medicinal properties and traditional used among indigenous peoples.

The Cactus' ability to thrive in harsh conditions has made them a Canadian symbol of hope, determination, and enduring love.
